I hate the rain. My hair was perfectly straight this morning.
I think it has to do with the trauma I experienced growing up. It seemed like all of my West Indian friends growing up never played in the rain and our parents weren't too keen on even letting us go over to the next building to play at each other's homes, for fear of dragging in the mud. Needless to say, my protest and promise to take off my shoes (which is a normal thing to do) didn't work.
Fast forward fifteen years and I still hate the rain. To top it off, I'm now too busy and too loaded down to walk with a pair of sneakers and rain boots when the time comes. Solution? A pair of black on black Authentic Hi Vans from
Mile End Kicks.
Never in a million years would I have expected a sneaker to hold up to rain like this. They make for a snug fit with a pair of thick hockey socks (as pictured) and made me feel a lot better about recycling my beaten up Converse when I realized my Converse laces would fit into the Vans eyelets.
My mother isn't completely sold on it, but after going through a few puddles (nothing deeper than an inch) and walking through some pretty nasty rain, I definitely prefer these over boots. It's weird, I can wear sneakers all day and not have aching feet, but put me in boots for more than two hours and I'm miserable. Now the sneakers do have a downside because they are definitely not slip proof, but dashing through the rain has never been a good idea anyways. There are a few close-ups below!
